The Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from singer R. Kelly, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of child sex crimes in Chicago. The Grammy Award-winning R&B artist, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was found guilty in 2022 on three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticing minors for sex.
Kelly’s legal team argued that a shorter statute of limitations should have applied to the offenses dating back to the 1990s. However, lower courts had previously rejected these arguments. The federal prosecutors presented a video as evidence showing Kelly abusing a girl, with the accuser known only as Jane testifying that she was 14 years old when the video was recorded.
In addition to his appeal related to the child sex crimes convictions, Kelly is also challenging a separate 30-year sentence for federal racketeering and sex trafficking offenses in New York. The justices of the Supreme Court did not provide detailed reasoning for their decision to not hear the appeal, which is customary in such cases.
It remains to be seen how Kelly will proceed following the Supreme Court’s decision, as he continues to face significant legal challenges and consequences for his actions.
