Tourists Criticised for Ignoring Safety Signs and Practicing Yoga Poses on Grand Canyon Ledge
Visitors to the Grand Canyon have faced online criticism after a video surfaced showing them sitting on a perilous ledge and allegedly engaging in yoga poses near the steep drop. The footage, shared on Instagram by Tourons of National Parks, showcases individuals flouting a ‘Do Not Enter’ sign and venturing to the edge of the North Rim Grand Canyon.
The video, posted at the end of August, captures the individuals disregarding warning signs and accessing the rocky edge of the cliff to take in the views. In the clip, a person can be seen seated on the ledge during what appears to be a sunset golden hour, raising concerns about their safety and disregard for park regulations.
According to Grand Canyon park ranger Sarah Anderson, who is credited in the video caption, the group of young adults had crossed over a closed trail sign to reach the edge. The caption also mentions that one person was performing yoga movements at the location. Despite being in awe of the sunset view, the group’s act of trespassing was reported for breaching safety protocols.
The Instagram post attracted mixed reactions, with some viewers defending the harmless intentions of the group, while others condemned their reckless behaviour. Concerns were raised about the potential risks involved in such actions, with comments highlighting the importance of adhering to park guidelines to prevent accidents that could require costly search and rescue operations.
The National Park Service advises visitors to stay on designated trails and always maintain a safe distance of at least six feet from cliff edges due to the high elevation and dry climate of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. This year alone, there have been 16 recorded fatalities at the iconic destination, underscoring the dangers of venturing off marked paths.
Recent incidents include the recovery of a 71-year-old boater’s body in mid-September and the fatal fall of a 20-year-old man from a scenic overlook in August. Park officials emphasise the importance of visitors’ safety and urge compliance with park regulations to avoid tragedies that could otherwise be preventable.
