Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called for the UK to “stand with the Jewish community” as he addresses the House of Commons on the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks. The Prime Minister emphasised the need for solidarity with the Jewish population and renewed his plea for a ceasefire, marking a year since the series of attacks by Hamas in Israel that led to subsequent Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
Describing October 7, 2023, as a dark day comparable to the Holocaust for the Jewish people, Sir Keir highlighted the lasting grief within the community. Today, Israeli civilians solemnly commemorate the anniversary of the violent Hamas assault, which resulted in the loss of approximately 1,200 lives and the taking of 251 hostages in Gaza, with 101 individuals still captive in the region.
Since the initial attacks, around 42,000 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israel’s retaliatory air and ground offensives in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-controlled health ministry locally. The somber commemoration arrives amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office aiding the evacuation of numerous individuals from Lebanon in recent days.
In a tragic turn of events, a reported 10 firefighters lost their lives in an Israeli bombing of a municipal structure in Bint Jbeil, located in southern Lebanon, according to the regional health ministry. Plumes of smoke billowed over parts of southern Lebanon as Israel resumed its targeted airstrikes, purportedly directed at Hezbollah operatives. The Lebanese health ministry, separate from the Iran-backed group, noted additional casualties, with 22 individuals killed and 111 wounded across the southern region in the prior day’s Israeli assaults.
