Barony Gardening Club members were treated to an enlightening and visually engaging talk on primulas during their recent meeting at Kirkmichael Hall, Parkgate. The club’s new venue set the stage for thirty-three members and guests to gather and listen to club member Jeanie Jones speak on the topic of “Primulas I have seen in the wild.”
Jeanie Jones shared her adventures in plant-hunting, recounting journeys to various regions like Yunnan (China), Bhutan, Tibet, Turkey, and Sikkim (India) between 2006 and 2017. Emphasising the importance of ethical plant observation, Jeanie explained that their expeditions focused on observing, photographing, and documenting plant species in their natural habitats without disturbing them. She showcased a range of primula species through her photographs, showcasing their beauty and diversity.
From primulas found in different altitudes to those facing challenges like over-grazing and habitat destruction, Jeanie’s talk highlighted the importance of conservation and respect for these delicate plants. She shared insights on how factors like sunlight exposure can affect flower colour variation and stressed the significance of sharing plant collections to preserve botanical diversity.
The gardening club’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be combined with a social evening featuring refreshments and plant sales. Scheduled for Thursday, November 7 at Kirkmichael Hall, Parkgate, the event promises to be a delightful gathering for plant enthusiasts and gardening aficionados alike.
