A police driver has recounted the “dramatic” moments leading up to the shooting of Chris Kaba by a Metropolitan Police firearms officer, as revealed during court proceedings. The officer, identified as AY3, expressed his concerns about his colleague almost being run over by an Audi driven by Kaba, as armed police officers surrounded the vehicle.
Witnesses described how police marksman Martyn Blake fired a fatal shot at Kaba, 24, through the windscreen after the suspect rammed a police car and then reversed into another during a police stop in Streatham, south London. Blake, 40, denies the charge of murdering Kaba in the incident that took place on 5th September 2022.
During his testimony at the Old Bailey, AY3, the driver of an unmarked police vehicle behind the Audi, recalled the intense scene where his colleague came close to being hit by the moving car. The driver highlighted the risky situation where officers approached the Audi, emphasizing the dramatic nature of the unfolding events.
Following the shooting, AY3 described how he and other officers administered CPR to Kaba before medical assistance arrived at the scene. The court also heard about the precautions police officers are advised to take in situations involving moving vehicles, including avoiding specific areas like the “triangle of death” at the front of a car to prevent serious injuries or worse.
The trial, expected to last three weeks, continues with further testimonies and evidence presented in the case against Martyn Blake. Prosecutors have argued that the shooting was unjustified, asserting that there was no immediate threat to the officers on foot during the incident. The defence has denied these allegations, maintaining Blake’s innocence in the matter.
The detailed recount of the events leading up to the shooting sheds light on the intensity and complexity of police operations in high-pressure situations, raising important questions about the use of force and officer safety protocols in such encounters. As the trial unfolds, more insights and perspectives are expected to emerge regarding the tragic incident involving Chris Kaba and the actions of the Metropolitan Police officers involved.
