Maya Rudolph brings back Kamala Harris for SNL’s landmark 50th season with a bang. The opening episode welcomed stars like Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, Andy Samberg, Bowen Yang, and James Austin Johnson portraying the candidates and their partners in the 2024 presidential election.
As the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Rudolph exclaimed, “Well, well, well, look who fell out of that coconut tree. Your fun aunt has returned.” She continued her quirky charm by referencing swing states and her campaign in a witty manner, drawing laughs from the audience.
The skit featured Gaffigan’s Tim Walz, who joined in with his own humour, adding a different dynamic to the scene. Rudolph’s Harris engaged playfully with the characters, including Samberg as her on-screen husband, Doug Emhoff.
The episode also saw SNL cast members James Austin Johnson and Bowen Yang portraying Donald Trump and JD Vance, respectively. Yang, in particular, made headlines with his candid response about a challenging SNL host behaviour experience.
The premiere episode, hosted by Jean Smart with musical guest Jelly Roll, was a hit. Smart charmed the audience with her monologue and a musical sketch about New York, reminiscing on her career and the show’s history.
SNL’s 50th season promises to continue delivering top-notch comedy and sharp satire each week on NBC. Fans can expect more memorable moments and brilliant performances as the season unfolds.
