A custodian was tragically shot and killed in what authorities are calling an ‘execution-style’ attack following an argument over gym etiquette. Rolando Viray Yanga, 60, was followed home from the gym and fatally shot by Maarji Afridi, 21, in Daly City, California. The dispute reportedly originated from Afridi repeatedly violating gym rules at Fitness 19 at the Westlake Shopping Center.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe revealed that the confrontation between the two men escalated over cleanliness issues at the gym, with Yanga calling out Afridi for not following the rules. The situation intensified as Yanga, who considered Afridi a troublemaker, confronted him about alleged vandalism in the gym’s bathroom.
Surveillance footage captured Yanga leaving the gym and being followed by a car, believed to be driven by Afridi. Shortly after, multiple gunshots were heard, resulting in Yanga’s tragic death outside his residence in Daly City. The shooting was described by authorities as an ‘execution murder,’ with eight shots fired from a 10mm handgun, indicating a deliberate and targeted attack.
Afridi was swiftly apprehended, along with his mother, Zaib Afridi, outside their apartment complex. Maarji Afridi has been charged with murder, along with additional enhancements like lying in wait, potentially leading to a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. His mother faces charges as an accessory to a felony. Both are scheduled to appear in court for further proceedings.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by the family to cover funeral costs, provide support, and retain Yanga’s truck has garnered over $42,000 in donations. Describing Yanga as a beloved figure who selflessly shared his talents and treasures with others, a friend noted his high standing in the community and the impact of his loss on those who knew him well.
