Experts Warn Against the Resurgence in Raw Milk Consumption
Raw milk is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, with public figures such as Marjorie Taylor Greene and holistic wellness influencers promoting its supposed benefits. However, government officials are cautioning against consuming raw milk products, especially following the detection of the first strain of bird flu (H5N1) infecting cows in states like Texas.
Recent research has revealed extremely high concentrations of the H5N1 virus in the udders of infected cows, raising concerns about the potential for human infections through unpasteurized milk. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has highlighted that pasteurization, a process developed by Louis Pasteur over a century ago, can effectively eliminate these pathogens if present in milk.
Despite the safety advantages of pasteurization, raw milk sales have surged by 65% this year, particularly in states where its sale is legal. The regulations surrounding raw milk vary widely across the US, leading to a patchwork of state laws. Some states prohibit its sale entirely, while others permit it to be sold at farmstands or through herd-sharing arrangements.
Advocates of raw milk argue that it not only offers superior taste but also provides nutritional benefits, claiming that it can even help alleviate allergies. Moreover, there is a prevalent issue of mistrust, where some individuals are sceptical of public health experts and government authorities in general.
Public health officials emphasise that the dangers associated with consuming raw milk outweigh any potential benefits. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified that raw milk can harbour harmful pathogens like E. coli, salmonella, and listeria, which can lead to severe foodborne illnesses, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
Studies conducted by both the CDC and FDA have shown that between 1998 and 2018, there were 202 disease outbreaks linked to the consumption of raw milk in the US, resulting in 2,645 illnesses, 228 hospitalisations, and three fatalities. Ingesting raw milk can trigger various infections, often manifesting as gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, and in severe cases, can progress to conditions such as muscle weakness, kidney failure, and bloodstream infections.
No matter how hygienic a farm may be, officials caution that contamination of milk by harmful bacteria can occur during its collection, storage, or transportation. Hence, the risks associated with raw milk consumption are significant and pose serious health threats that should not be underestimated.
