Patients of disgraced surgeon Mr. Sam Eljamel have expressed their support for a meeting of a public inquiry, considering it a positive initial step for the victims involved. The Eljamel Inquiry engaged with the public during an event in Dundee, where patients of the former neurosurgeon, believed to have harmed around 200 individuals, were assured of being at the forefront of the inquiry into his actions. One patient, Jules Rose, who had her tear duct removed instead of a brain tumour by Mr. Eljamel in 2013, described the meeting as a positive experience.
However, concerns were raised by the lead campaigner regarding the inquiry’s potential omission of investigating the role of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Ms. Rose highlighted the significance of including the HSE in the investigation and emphasised the importance of giving patients a voice in the process. Patients gathered to hear Lord Weir, who heads the inquiry into Mr. Eljamel, assure them that they would play a pivotal role in shaping the investigation.
Mr. Eljamel worked at NHS Tayside from 1995 until his suspension in 2013, following multiple cases of patients being left with serious injuries. The public inquiry was instigated by former first minister Humza Yousaf last year, with delays in the investigation drawing criticism from victims. Lord Weir acknowledged the prolonged wait for answers and pledged to work diligently to conduct a thorough investigation within a reasonable timeframe.
The team responsible for scrutinising Mr. Eljamel’s actions and NHS Tayside, led by Jamie Dawson KC, outlined the inquiry’s comprehensive scope. Key areas of examination include the appointment process that led to Mr. Eljamel’s employment, the clinical governance of NHS Tayside, and potential concealment of professional wrongdoing by Mr. Eljamel and the NHS. In addition to the inquiry, independent clinical reviews headed by Professor Stephen Wigmore will be offered to former patients of Mr. Eljamel.
