A tragic incident occurred in Zion National Park in southwest Utah, where a canyoneer fell to his death while rappelling in Heaps Canyon. The 40-year-old man, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, lost his life after plummeting between 150 and 200 feet near the Upper Emerald Pool.
The ill-fated accident took place on Saturday evening when the man was descending the canyon with three companions. Despite following their planned route, the group encountered the fatal fall, prompting an immediate response from Zion’s search and rescue team along with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is currently ongoing.
Following the distressing incident, the Utah Department of Public Safety deployed a helicopter to extract the man’s body to the Watchman Campground area where further medical attention was provided. Regrettably, he was pronounced dead before being airlifted to a hospital. Authorities have confirmed that the canyoneer’s death was accidental.
Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, acknowledging the profound difficulty of the situation. Two of the remaining canyoneers were safely airlifted, while the third individual was assisted by the search and rescue team to descend the canyon unharmed.
