MRI Scans Uncover Brain Damage Caused by Long Covid
Recent MRI scans have shed light on the neurological impact long Covid can have on the brain. Researchers have suggested that symptoms of long Covid, such as breathlessness and fatigue, could be attributed to damage to the brainstem.
The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge, utilised powerful MRI scanners to examine 30 patients who were hospitalised with Covid-19. The scans revealed significant and lasting brain changes believed to be a result of an immune response to the virus.
Typically, individuals with Covid-19 experience an improvement in symptoms within a few weeks. However, for some, symptoms persist, leading to what is known as long Covid. This condition can manifest as extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, brain fog, dizziness, heart palpitations, and muscle aches.
Dr. Catarina Rua, from the University of Cambridge, highlighted the importance of studying the brainstem in understanding the lingering effects of Covid-19. The brainstem, responsible for regulating various bodily functions, is challenging to scan due to its size and position in the body.
The team compared the brain scans of Covid-19 patients with those of individuals who had not been infected. They discovered abnormalities in multiple regions of the brainstem, particularly in areas involved in respiratory control. These abnormalities were more pronounced in patients with severe Covid-19, longer hospital stays, and heightened inflammatory responses.
Professor James Rowe, co-lead of the study, emphasised the connection between physical and mental health, noting that patients with a stronger immune response also exhibited higher levels of depression and anxiety. Understanding how the brainstem is affected by Covid-19 infection could aid in developing more effective treatments for long Covid.
The findings of the study, published in the journal Brain, offer valuable insights into the neurological repercussions of Covid-19. By comprehending the changes in the brainstem caused by the virus, researchers hope to enhance the management of long-term effects associated with Covid-19.
