Scots TV presenter Lorraine Kelly was bestowed with the title of Fellow by New College Lanarkshire at a special ceremony held at the college’s Coatbridge campus. The event not only honoured Lorraine but also managed to raise over £21,000 for the NCL Foundation, which aims to support students in accessing education. Elaine Turkington, the college registrar, delivered the laureation address, praising Lorraine for her remarkable career, positive influence, and continuous inspiration to many.
Following her 40th anniversary in broadcasting, Lorraine expressed her gratitude for the honour, describing it as a “fantastic night” that left her feeling deeply honoured and overwhelmed with joy. The evening featured musical performances by students Niamh Morris and Veronica Glendinning, along with an engaging question-and-answer session between Lorraine and NCL’s principal and chief executive, Professor Christopher Moore. Discussions ranged from Lorraine’s upbringing in East Kilbride to her experiences reporting on significant events such as the Lockerbie and Dunblane tragedies.
Professor Moore acknowledged the significance of the week for Lorraine, celebrating her 40 years in broadcasting while welcoming her as the newest Fellow of NCL. He commended Lorraine’s support for the Foundation and the entertainment she provided during the event. The evening’s success was underscored by the announcement that it had raised over £21,000, including generous donations from various sources like Lady Susan Haughey, AMCOL, WBG, and contributions from college staff and students who undertook challenges to support the cause.
The ceremony not only highlighted Lorraine’s achievements but also underscored the commitment of New College Lanarkshire to fostering educational opportunities and community engagement. Lorraine’s gracious acceptance of the recognition, combined with the charitable contributions made during the event, exemplifies the spirit of dedication and generosity within the academic community.
