Madeleine McCann suspect cleared of rape charges and possible release from prison
Christian Brueckner has been acquitted of all rape charges in his trial in Germany and may soon be let out of jail. The 47-year-old was facing allegations of sexually assaulting women and exposing himself to children in the Algarve, Portugal. These charges are not linked to the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, which Brueckner denies any involvement in.
Brueckner is suspected of kidnapping Madeleine from Praia da Luz in 2007 and causing her harm, while her parents were away dining with friends. Prosecutors have previously hinted at having evidence suggesting Madeleine is deceased, though the specifics have not been disclosed. The breakthrough in the case came after information was provided by Helge Busching, Brueckner’s former acquaintance, in 2017.
Busching reached out to Scotland Yard with details about a conversation he had with Brueckner, where he allegedly mentioned Madeleine’s case. This led to a joint investigation by German and Portuguese authorities focusing on Brueckner as the primary suspect. Further revelations emerged, including claims of Brueckner’s involvement in assaulting women in Portugal and his connection to incidents of child indecency in the region.
One key witness in Brueckner’s trial was tour rep Hazel Behan, who identified him as the man who attacked her in her Portuguese apartment in 2004. She described the assault in court, pointing out Brueckner’s distinct blue eyes as she recounted the harrowing experience. Another witness, Laurentiu Codin, disclosed that Brueckner had allegedly confessed to him about abducting a child in Portugal.
Despite Brueckner currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for raping an American woman in Praia da Luz, the authorities have yet to definitively link him to Madeleine’s disappearance. Pressure mounts for charges to be pressed as the investigation continues. The trial shed light on Brueckner’s criminal past and alleged offences, but the quest for justice for Madeleine McCann’s fate remains ongoing.
