Early trends in the election results of the states of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir have shown a mixed outcome for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP is seeking a third consecutive term in Haryana and aims to make progress in Kashmir, where elections are being held for the first time in a decade.
The importance of these elections cannot be understated for the BJP, as it endeavours to secure another victory in Haryana and establish a presence in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that lost its special status under Article 370 of the Indian constitution in 2019.
The political landscape in both states hinges on the outcomes of the assembly elections. In Haryana, despite defying exit polls, the BJP has crossed the halfway mark and is leading ahead of opposition parties such as the Indian National Congress. Meanwhile, in Jammu & Kashmir, the power dynamics remain uncertain, with the Congress and National Conference alliance vying for control against a potential upset by the BJP.
As of 1.27 pm on Tuesday, the BJP had clinched one seat in Haryana and was leading in 49 constituencies out of 90, as reported by the Election Commission of India. Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed confidence in forming the government, while Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda remains optimistic about their chances. Notably, other regional parties like INLD and Bahujan Samaj Party are also in the running in this two-party contest.
In Jammu & Kashmir, exit polls suggest a potential victory for the Congress-National Conference coalition, with the National Conference expected to secure the majority of seats, as the BJP looks to strengthen its position from the previous elections. The voter turnout in the three-phase election was recorded at 63.45 per cent, slightly lower than the 2014 turnout of 65.52 per cent.
Formerly prominent in Jammu & Kashmir, the People’s Democratic Party is projected to face challenges in this election. Moreover, the BJP’s decision to leave the appointment of members in five reserved seats to the lieutenant governor of the Union Territory sparked controversy, with accusations of undermining democracy.
These election results will have significant implications for the BJP’s political future in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, as they reflect the shifting dynamics and aspirations of the electorate in these regions.
