The family of a man who was brutally murdered 35 years ago is hopeful for a breakthrough in the case as the police have reopened the investigation, spurred by advances in forensic technology. Richard Haywood, also known as Ricky, suffered a fatal attack when he was shot multiple times in his home above Ambiance Jewellers on Shirley Road in Southampton on 16th October 1989.
Despite the passage of more than three decades, no one has been held accountable for the murder of the 36-year-old Ricky. The reopening of the case by Hampshire Constabulary marks a renewed effort to seek justice using modern forensic techniques. Crimestoppers, a charity, has announced a reward of £20,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator, which can be provided anonymously.
In a poignant statement released through the police, Ricky’s sister expressed the enduring pain caused by his untimely death, underscoring the devastating impact on their family. She recounted her mother’s lifelong anguish over never knowing the identity of her son’s killer, a burden she carried to her grave.
