Grieving family of man murdered 35 years ago hope for forensic breakthrough as police reopen investigation

The family of a man who was brutally murdered 35 years ago is hopeful for a breakthrough in the case as the police have reopened the investigation, spurred by advances in forensic technology. Richard Haywood, also known as Ricky, suffered a fatal attack when he was shot multiple times in his home above Ambiance Jewellers on Shirley Road in Southampton on 16th October 1989.

Despite the passage of more than three decades, no one has been held accountable for the murder of the 36-year-old Ricky. The reopening of the case by Hampshire Constabulary marks a renewed effort to seek justice using modern forensic techniques. Crimestoppers, a charity, has announced a reward of £20,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator, which can be provided anonymously.

In a poignant statement released through the police, Ricky’s sister expressed the enduring pain caused by his untimely death, underscoring the devastating impact on their family. She recounted her mother’s lifelong anguish over never knowing the identity of her son’s killer, a burden she carried to her grave. The family remains haunted by the unresolved tragedy and is hopeful that this latest appeal will finally bring closure and justice.

Detective Inspector Elizabeth Brunt, heading the reinvestigation, made a heartfelt plea for cooperation from anyone with knowledge of the shooting incident. She urged potential witnesses to come forward and assist in unravelling the mystery surrounding Ricky’s death. Emphasising the significance of disclosure for the bereaved family, DI Brunt appealed to the public conscience, highlighting the long years of uncertainty endured by Ricky’s loved ones.

Beth Simpson, regional manager for Crimestoppers, reiterated the charity’s commitment to seeking answers and justice in Ricky’s case. She encouraged individuals holding even the smallest piece of information to step forward and share it anonymously, assuring confidentiality and no police involvement or court appearances. Simpson emphasised that time had not diminished the importance of shedding light on this cold case and providing solace to Ricky’s family.

The enduring quest for justice in Ricky’s murder underscores the relentless efforts of both law enforcement and the community to seek closure in unresolved cases. As advancements in forensic technology offer new possibilities for investigation, the hope for answers and accountability grows stronger, renewing the determination to uncover the truth behind this tragic crime.
