Water flooding through palm trees and sand dunes in the Sahara Desert has created a rare spectacle following an unprecedented rainfall event. The unexpected deluge has transformed the typically arid landscape into a scene of blue lagoons and nourished some of the most drought-stricken regions within the desert with a volume of water not seen in many decades.
In southeastern Morocco, where the desert is known for its extreme dryness and rarity of rain during late summer, the recent two-day rainfall in September has far surpassed the usual yearly averages in several areas receiving less than 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rainfall annually. Regions such as Tata, among the hardest-hit areas, experienced a significant influx of water. For instance, in Tagounite, a village located approximately 450 km (280 miles) south of Rabat, over 100 mm (3.9 inches) of rainfall was recorded within just 24 hours.
The storms brought about an abundance of rainfall, leading to awe-inspiring scenes of water flowing through the Sahara’s sands alongside palm trees and desert flora. This exceptional weather phenomenon has amazed residents and tourists alike, with some describing it as the most significant rainfall event in decades. Houssine Youabeb from Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology highlighted that the region had not witnessed such extensive rain in such a short period for several decades.
The rainfall, attributed to an extratropical storm by meteorologists, is anticipated to have long-term effects on the region’s weather patterns. The increased moisture in the air is likely to result in more evaporation and subsequent storms in the future. After enduring six consecutive years of drought, the recent downpour is a welcome relief for Morocco, with the replenishment of groundwater aquifers and reservoirs crucial for sustaining water supplies in desert communities.
While the rainfall is a positive development, it has also brought challenges, including casualties, damaged harvests, and the need for emergency relief funds. Notably, more than 20 fatalities were reported in Morocco and Algeria, and farmers suffered losses as their crops were destroyed. On a brighter note, satellite imagery from NASA revealed the replenishment of Lake Iriqui, a renowned lakebed that had remained dry for half a century.
