Alex Pereira reveals he overcame multiple health issues to score stunning UFC 307 win

Alex Pereira shared his journey of overcoming multiple health challenges to secure a victory over Khalil Rountree Jr at UFC 307. The Brazilian fighter disclosed that he faced various health issues leading up to the fight but managed to emerge victorious with a fourth-round TKO win to retain the light-heavyweight title for the third time this year.

Prior to his bout with Rountree Jr, Pereira had triumphed over former champions Jamahal Hill and Jiri Prochazka in his previous title defences in April and June. He had also clinched the vacant belt by knocking out Prochazka in November the previous year. Despite receiving accolades for his performance, Pereira mentioned that his accomplishments came at a physical cost due to the demanding training camps and injuries he endured.

Speaking at a post-fight press conference, the 37-year-old fighter revealed the challenges he faced during his preparation for the fight. Pereira detailed his struggles with visa issues, rib injuries, throat infections, and a recurring toe ligament injury from a previous fight. Despite the obstacles, he expressed pride in overcoming these adversities to claim victory in the octagon.

Pereira, who transitioned to the UFC from kickboxing in 2021, has garnered praise for his swift rise in the sport. After winning the middleweight belt in 2022 by defeating Israel Adesanya, he later lost the title to Adesanya in 2023 and then moved on to the light-heavyweight division where he has maintained a perfect record, defeating multiple former champions in the process.

Reflecting on his recent health struggles, Pereira admitted the toll it took on his body and mind, emphasizing the need for rest and recovery post-fight. Despite his eagerness to continue pushing himself in the sport, he acknowledged the importance of taking breaks to allow his body to recuperate before diving back into training for future bouts.

As Pereira looks ahead to upcoming commitments in countries like Mexico, Korea, and Malta, he stressed the significance of balancing training intensity with adequate rest periods to ensure his long-term health and performance sustainability in the competitive world of mixed martial arts.
