Japanese prosecutors have announced that they will not appeal the acquittal of the world’s longest-serving death-row inmate in a recent retrial, closing the chapter on a 1966 murder case that has spanned over half a century of legal wrangling.
In a historic decision, the prosecution has chosen not to challenge the ruling of the Shizuoka District Court that found 88-year-old Iwao Hakamada not guilty last month. This brings an end to a prolonged legal battle marked by allegations of fabricated evidence and forced confessions.
Prosecutor-general Naomi Unemoto expressed regret for subjecting Hakamada to a prolonged legal limbo, stating, “We feel sorry for putting him in a legally unstable situation for an extremely long time.” The Shizuoka court’s verdict highlighted collusion between law enforcement and prosecutors in manipulating evidence against the former boxer.
Following the court’s exoneration on October 26, Hakamada’s 91-year-old sister, Hideko Hakamada, expressed relief, remarking, “I’m delighted that we finally resolved this. Case closed.” The decision not to appeal by the prosecution solidifies Hakamada’s acquittal, ending a legal saga that has dragged on for decades.
The Supreme Public Prosecutors Office also issued an apology for the prolonged legal ordeal faced by Hakamada and vowed to investigate the delays in the retrial process. Hakamada’s case has shone a light on Japan’s justice system, known for its high conviction rates and rare instances of retrials.
Convicted in 1968 for a quadruple murder, Hakamada spent over 45 years on death row, making him the world’s longest-serving death-row inmate. With the conclusion of the retrial, he is now eligible for government compensation amounting to around $1.4 million. Additionally, Hakamada’s legal team is contemplating legal action against the authorities involved in the fabrication of evidence.
