A small town in Thailand gathered for a solemn mass cremation ceremony to honour the lives of 23 individuals who tragically died in a school trip bus fire. The emotional event saw mourners weeping and monks offering prayers for the young students and teachers who lost their lives in the devastating incident.
The cremation took place in a central Thai town, with a large site set up near the temple in Lan Sak. The school attended by the victims was located in this town, adding to the poignant significance of the ceremony. Multiple furnaces were erected, adorned with floral tributes in remembrance of those who perished in the bus fire.
On a fateful day, six teachers and 39 students from elementary and junior high school were on the bus when it caught fire on a highway in Pathum Thani, a suburb of Bangkok. The fire spread rapidly, allowing only 22 individuals to escape. Following forensic work in Bangkok to identify the badly burnt bodies, the remains of the victims were returned to their hometown for funeral rites that commenced last week.
The tragic incident has sparked nationwide outrage over safety measures and led to swift legal action. The bus driver has been arrested for alleged reckless driving, and the company owner faces charges of negligence causing death. Authorities have also scrutinised transport officials, revealing that the bus had passed an inspection just four months prior to the fire. Investigations unveiled that the bus was equipped with 11 natural gas canisters despite having a permit for only six. It was modified to run on compressed natural gas, a factor believed to have contributed to the fire.
In response, over 13,000 buses operating on compressed natural gas are undergoing inspection within a 60-day period. The Ministry of Education has temporarily suspended school study trips in the wake of the accident. Tuesday’s cremation ceremony in Uthai Thai province was held under the patronage of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, represented by the head of his Privy Council, Surayud Chulanont, a former army chief and prime minister.
