A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives aims to award Congressional Gold Medals to the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Olympic hockey team. The team famously defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union in Lake Placid, New York, during a time of heightened Cold War tensions.
Congressman Pete Stauber from Minnesota, along with co-sponsors Elise Stefanik from New York and Mike Quigley from Illinois, introduced the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act. Stauber expressed deep gratitude towards the team, stating that their achievement remains a defining sports moment in his lifetime.
The proposed bill involves creating three Congressional Gold Medals, with one intended for display at the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Minnesota, another at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, and the third at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs. Stauber, who was 13 at the time of the Miracle on Ice, has been collaborating with USA Hockey to move the bill forward for consideration after the upcoming elections.
The passing of key team members in recent years, including Mark Wells and Mark Pavelich, as well as coach Herb Brooks, has added urgency to the process. Stauber emphasized the importance of bestowing this honor upon the living team members in a timely manner, acknowledging their significant contribution to sports history.
Stauber is determined to push the legislation forward swiftly, aiming to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the historic victory on Feb. 22. He expressed a strong desire to celebrate with the remaining living team members in Lake Placid, recognising their enduring legacy from that iconic moment in 1980.
