A mother has disclosed shocking images of her daughter’s injuries following a dog attack, in an effort to raise awareness of the dangers posed by irresponsible dog ownership. The 12-year-old girl sustained life-changing injuries when she was attacked by an out-of-control dog as she was getting out of a car with her father. The incident occurred in The Crescent, Nantyglo, Brynmawr, prompting a police response at approximately 5.50 pm on Monday, October 7.
The victim’s family, choosing to remain anonymous, recounted the swift and unexpected nature of the attack, which left the schoolgirl with serious injuries to her arm and back. Despite the father managing to restrain the dog until authorities arrived, the young girl suffered significant harm to her arm, potentially necessitating a skin graft from her leg. The mother described the dog as resembling an XL Bully breed and urged all dog owners to register their pets, ensure they are muzzled, and keep them on a lead at all times.
Expressing her devastation at the incident, the girl’s mother highlighted the need for vigilance in the presence of dogs and emphasized the importance of responsible ownership. The family conveyed their gratitude for the support received and the victim is currently awaiting surgery to address her injuries. Police confirmed that the dog involved has been euthanised by a veterinary surgeon, and two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of owning a dog bred for fighting and allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control.
Superintendent John Davies reassured the community that there is no ongoing danger to the public and encouraged anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation. The mother’s plea for responsible dog ownership serves as a reminder of the critical need to prioritise safety when handling pets. Authorities have urged individuals to report any relevant information to the police via their website, social media, or by calling the provided helpline. This incident underscores the importance of proper dog handling practices to prevent similar tragic events in the future.
