Qantas Airways has issued an apology following a controversial incident where an R-rated film was shown on every screen during a recent flight. The Australian airline faced backlash after technical issues with the in-flight entertainment system led to the same movie being broadcast across all screens on a flight from Sydney to Haneda.
According to reports, the crew selected the movie “Daddio” to play throughout the flight based on requests from some passengers due to the individual movie selection feature being unavailable. “Daddio,” starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, is an R-rated film known for its explicit content including strong language, sexual material, and brief nudity.
Passengers on the flight, including families with children, expressed discomfort over the mature content of the film, with social media posts highlighting concerns about nudity and inappropriate themes. Despite attempts by the crew to address the issue by trying to switch off the movie for those who didn’t want to watch it, they ultimately had to change all screens to a family-friendly movie for the remainder of the flight.
A Qantas spokesperson issued a statement expressing regret over the incident, acknowledging that the choice of movie was not suitable for all passengers. The airline assured that they are reviewing how movies are selected for in-flight entertainment to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
In response to the incident, Qantas faced online criticism from both passengers and competitors, with rival airline Air New Zealand making a playful jab at the situation, emphasising their own passenger-centered approach.
