Storm surge is the level at which seawater rises above its normal level, creating fast-moving water with waves that can act as a battering ram, causing immense destruction.
Florida’s west peninsular coast, which includes not only Tampa but also St. Petersburg and other densely populated areas, is at risk from the storm surge. The potential impact extends over 150 miles in various directions, putting millions of residents in harm’s way. If Hurricane Milton hits the southern part of the region, cities like Sarasota, Venice, Fort Myers, and Naples could face catastrophic flooding similar to the aftermath of Hurricane Ian two years prior.
Efforts are being made to clear the debris left behind by Hurricane Helene, but with Hurricane Milton looming, the risks have heightened. Storms like Milton can turn debris into deadly projectiles, adding to the potential for property damage and threats to lives.
