‘It’s not about you Kamala!’ DeSantis lashes out at Harris as they spar over Hurricane Milton

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has rebuked Vice President Kamala Harris for allegedly politicizing storm preparations ahead of Hurricane Milton’s arrival in the U.S. DeSantis responded after Harris criticized him for reportedly ignoring her calls, calling the Republican governor “selfish.” In an interview with Fox News, DeSantis stated that his focus had been solely on emergency preparations for the approaching hurricane and not on interacting with Harris. He emphasised, “It’s not about you, Kamala. It’s about the people of Florida.”

DeSantis accused Harris of only taking an interest in Florida’s hurricane response when she began her presidential campaign, questioning her sudden involvement. However, in 2022, Harris visited South Florida to announce $1 billion in federal aid for extreme weather preparedness. The Governor dismissed Harris’s attempts to contact him in light of the impending storm, affirming his dedication to managing the crisis at hand.

Vice President Harris, appearing on The View, defended her outreach efforts to DeSantis, citing the exceptional threat posed by Hurricane Milton. She stressed the importance of bipartisan collaboration in disaster response and expressed her intention to continue supporting Florida if elected President in the future. The recent disagreement between DeSantis and Harris stems from reports that DeSantis declined to communicate with Harris after Hurricane Helene hit the state.

Amidst the tense exchange between the White House and the Florida governor’s office, Tampa braces for Hurricane Milton’s impact, anticipated as the region’s most severe storm in a century upon landfall. Florida continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, which caused casualties and widespread power outages. The strained relations exemplify the broader issue of partisanship affecting disaster responses, with figures like former President Donald Trump spreading unfounded claims about aid distribution.

As Florida readies itself for the incoming storm and navigates the aftermath of recent disasters, the clash between DeSantis and Harris underscores the challenges faced in managing natural calamities amidst political tensions.
