People have less than six months to fill in National Insurance gaps to maximise State Pension

People residing in Lanarkshire are running out of time to address any National Insurance gaps from 2006 onwards in order to maximize their State Pension entitlement. The deadline for making voluntary contributions to fill these gaps is fast approaching, with less than six months left. Since the launch of the government’s online service in April 2024, over 10,000 payments totaling £12.5 million have been made to enhance individuals’ State Pension, as reported by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The digital platform allows individuals to assess their National Insurance record for any deficiencies, calculate the impact of making a payment on their State Pension, and proceed with the payment if desired. Statistics reveal that 51% of users boosted one year of their National Insurance record, with an average online payment amounting to £1193. The maximum weekly increase in State Pension stands at £107.44.

After the upcoming deadline on April 5, individuals in Lanarkshire will only have the option to make voluntary contributions for the preceding six tax years, aligning with regular time restrictions. The online checking tool on GOV.UK has been utilized by 3.7 million people since its introduction in April, allowing individuals to review their State Pension forecast.

Emma Reynolds, Minister for Pensions, emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity to plug National Insurance gaps before the deadline passes. Lanarkshire residents can access the “Check your State Pension forecast” tool through their online account or the HMRC app. It is crucial to beware of potential scams and refrain from sharing HMRC login details.

Men born after April 6, 1951, and women born after April 6, 1953, are eligible to make voluntary National Insurance contributions to bolster their State Pension. It is advised for individuals to explore National Insurance credits eligibility before considering voluntary payments.

The initiative aims to secure a comfortable and supported retirement for current and future pensioners. Users of the HMRC app can conveniently access their pension information, including current retirement estimates and National Insurance records. As the deadline approaches, individuals are urged to take advantage of this opportunity and secure their financial future.
