Mikey Lewis Named Super League Man of Steel
Hull Kingston Rovers’ talented half-back, Mikey Lewis, has been awarded the prestigious title of the 2024 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel in the Betfred Super League. The 23-year-old star was honoured at a ceremony in Leeds on Tuesday night, marking the first time a Rovers player has clinched this accolade since Gavin Miller in 1986.
Lewis played a pivotal role in guiding his team to their first-ever Grand Final, where they are set to face off against Wigan at Old Trafford this Saturday. His remarkable performance included scoring 19 tries, placing him third in the season’s standings, along with kicking 70 goals to accumulate a total of 216 points.
The competition for the award was stiff, with Warrington’s full-back Matt Dufty and Salford’s half-back Marc Sneyd making up the shortlist. However, Lewis’s exceptional displays on the field ultimately earned him the title.
Rovers captain Elliot Minchella praised Lewis, describing him as a game-changer whose influence on the team has been significant. Minchella expressed his belief that Lewis has immense potential yet to be fully realised, highlighting his evolving leadership skills and impressive kicking game.
In addition to Lewis’s triumph, the accolades continued for Hull Kingston Rovers as head coach Willie Peters was named Super League Coach of the Year, narrowly beating out Wigan’s Matt Peet. Meanwhile, in the Championship category, Daryl Powell and Max Jowitt of Wakefield were honoured as Coach and Player of the Year, respectively.
The awards ceremony also recognised other standout individuals, including Georgie Hetherington of York, who was named Woman of Steel, and St Helens’ Matty Smith, who received the Women’s Super League Coach of the Year award. Leeds’ Joshua Butler rounded out the honours by winning the Wheels of Steel award for the Wheelchair Super League.
The success of Mikey Lewis and his fellow awardees serves as a testament to the skill and dedication present in the Super League, showcasing the outstanding talent within the rugby community.
