Child star of Gladiator expresses excitement over Paul Mescal playing his role in the sequel

Spencer Treat Clark, known for his role as Lucius Verus in the 2000 classic Gladiator, has shared his anticipation for Paul Mescal portraying his character in the upcoming sequel. Clark, who was only 13 when Gladiator was first released, played the son of Roman Empress Lucilla in the original film.

Mescal, now 28, is set to take on the role of Lucius Verus in Gladiator II, with a twist revealing that his character’s father is portrayed by Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius. In a recent trailer for the film, Lucilla imparts words of wisdom to Lucius, citing his father’s strength and legacy.

In an interview with People, Clark expressed his positive impressions of the trailer and his excitement for the sequel. He commended the new film, stating, “The movie looks so good, and Paul’s going to do such a great job.” Clark also mentioned the surreal experience of being recognised for his role in Gladiator after so many years.

The forthcoming movie is set some time after Maximus’ death, with Lucius forced to fight in the Colosseum under the rule of tyrannical emperors who have seized power in Rome. The storyline revolves around Lucius’ efforts to reclaim Rome for its people and restore the empire to its former glory.

Mescal, reflecting on the plot twist, revealed his initial shock upon learning about the direction of the sequel from director Ridley Scott. He described the weight of responsibility that came with the role, stating, “The screenplay does a lot of that work for you in terms of the DNA and genetics that Lucius inherits.”

As anticipation builds for the release of Gladiator II, fans are eager to see how Mescal will interpret the role of Lucius Verus and the unfolding saga of the Roman Empire. The sequel promises to captivate audiences with its blend of action, drama, and historical intrigue.
