Geoffrey Hinton warns of AI’s growing danger after Nobel Prize win

British-Canadian computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, who has been dubbed the ‘godfather of AI’, issued a stark warning about the increasing risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) following his recent Nobel Prize win in Physics.

Professor Hinton, 76, expressed his surprise at receiving the prestigious award, which he shares with John Hopfield of Princeton University. While his groundbreaking work has paved the way for advancements in machine learning, enabling computers to simulate human intelligence, his focus has now shifted towards advocating for the safe development of AI technology.

Having made headlines last year after stepping down from his position at Google over concerns about the potential misuse of AI, Professor Hinton emphasised the urgent need for further research into AI safety. He highlighted the heightened risks of cyber-attacks, fake videos, and political interference associated with unchecked AI advancements.

During a media briefing following his Nobel Prize win, Professor Hinton reiterated the concerns raised by many experts in the field, pointing towards the possibility of AI surpassing human intelligence in the next two decades. He cautioned that the prospect of more intelligent entities being controlled by less intelligent beings raises serious questions about the future implications of AI.

Reflecting on his unexpected award, Professor Hinton shared his astonishment at being recognised in the field of physics, despite his academic background being predominantly in artificial intelligence. He underscored the significance of the Nobel committee acknowledging the significant progress made in artificial neural networks, a cornerstone of AI development.

Throughout his illustrious career, spanning research tenures at institutions like the University of Toronto and the University of Edinburgh, Professor Hinton has been a pioneer in the exploration and application of AI technologies. Notably, his co-creation of the Boltzmann machine in 1985 laid the groundwork for modern AI applications such as image generation and recommendation algorithms.

Despite his accomplishments, Professor Hinton has remained steadfast in his commitment to ethical research practices, refusing funding from the American military and relocating to Canada to continue his work. In addition to his contributions to AI technology, he has also raised concerns about the potential impact of AI on employment markets.

Professor Hinton, along with Professor Hopfield, will share a prize fund of 11 million Swedish krona (£810,000), which he intends to donate to charitable causes supporting neurodiverse young adults. His dedication to the responsible advancement of AI technology serves as a timely reminder of the importance of prioritising safety and ethical considerations in the development of artificial intelligence.
