Human-caused climate change has been identified as a significant contributor to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, with scientists indicating that similar effects are likely to be seen in Hurricane Milton, which is currently threatening the Florida coast. According to a new flash study, the rainfall of Hurricane Helene was boosted by around 10%, while its wind speeds intensified by approximately 11%. The study also revealed that the warming climate increased Helene’s wind speeds by about 13 miles per hour (20.92 kilometers per hour) and made the sea temperatures that fueled the storm much more likely.
Ben Clarke, a climate researcher at Imperial College London and co-author of the study, highlighted that the warmer air caused by climate change can hold more moisture, leading to even higher rainfall totals. The impacts of Hurricane Helene were catastrophic, with record storm surges, sustained high winds, and unprecedented amounts of rainfall causing widespread damage and loss of life. The study warned that the continued burning of fossil fuels could result in more intense hurricanes with devastating flooding, both on coasts and well inland.
Hurricanes as severe as Helene are now 2.5 times more likely to occur in the region compared to previous expectations, indicating the influence of climate change on extreme weather events.
