A father and his three children, missing for three years, were recently spotted in the wilderness of New Zealand by pig hunters. Tom Phillips and his children, Ember (8), Maverick (9), and Jayda (11), were seen walking near Marokopa town on the North Island. Dressed in camouflage and carrying backpacks, they appeared well-prepared for the wilderness.
The sighting marked the first confirmation of the family’s whereabouts since they disappeared in December 2021. Mr Phillips took his children after a dispute with their mother and was in violation of a custody order. The children, believed to have had no contact with the outside world since then, were reported to be alive and in good health by their relieved mother, Catherine.
Despite extensive searches, rewards, and appeals, Mr Phillips and his children remained elusive until now. During a brief encounter with the hunters, one of the children asked if anyone knew they were there, showing a level of caution. The hunters discreetly recorded the family and promptly alerted the police, who launched a search operation using helicopters with night vision.
While the family was not found during the search, it provided a positive lead in the investigation. Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders expressed the authorities’ commitment to a safe reunion for Jayda, Maverick, and Ember with their wider family. An arrest warrant had been issued for Mr Phillips after his disappearance in 2021, with additional allegations of armed robbery and other crimes.
The children’s mother, emotional after the sighting, expressed a mix of relief and concern. She highlighted the challenges her daughter Ember faced due to asthma and questioned the children’s well-being in the wilderness. A heartfelt letter supposedly written by Mr Phillips was shared earlier, reflecting regret and a desire for reconciliation.
The family’s reappearance has brought hope and urgency to their safe return after years of uncertainty. The public has been advised not to approach Mr Phillips, given his potential armed status. The authorities continue to focus on gathering information and following leads for the family’s safe recovery.
