Alison Steadman reveals the scene that convinced her to do Gavin and Stacey

Alison Steadman, the esteemed actor, recently shared the pivotal scene that convinced her to take on the role in the popular sitcom “Gavin and Stacey.” Steadman portrayed Gavin’s neurotic mother, Pamela, in the show. Reflecting back on receiving the script in 2006, Steadman recalled how Pam’s distinctive Essex accent immediately resonated with her as she read the lines.

The scene that won Steadman over depicted Pam lounging on the sofa with cucumber slices on her eyes, recovering from watching an emotional wildlife program. In this scene, Pam recounts how a mother badger was crying over her deceased babies, leading Gavin to skeptically comment that badgers don’t cry. Undeterred, Pam responds with, “Gavin, I know what I saw,” which struck a chord with Steadman, compelling her to take on the role.

Steadman expressed her connection to the character, stating, “I could hear the voice, and it just clicked with me.” Portraying Pam, affectionately known as “Three Steaks Pam” to devoted viewers, alongside her on-screen husband Mick, played by Larry Lamb, until the series concluded in 2010.

In her memoir “Out of Character,” Steadman fondly reflected on the chemistry she shared with Larry Lamb, who portrayed Mick. Describing a memorable scene involving Pam’s Atkins diet featuring three steaks, Steadman highlighted the joy and rapport she experienced working with Lamb, both on and off the screen.

Throughout the series, Pam delivered memorable one-liners, such as “You’re a leek-munching sheep sh*****,” showcasing her quirky and endearing personality. Other trademark phrases like “Oh, my Christ” and “You and me are going to fall out today, Mick, Michael,” further solidified Pam as a beloved character in the hearts of fans.

Co-created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, “Gavin and Stacey” follows the love story between Gavin, an Essex boy, and Stacey, a Welsh girl, and the intertwining of their families. The beloved series is set to return for a final episode on Christmas Day, marking the official conclusion to the show that has captivated audiences.

The upcoming episode will continue from the 2019 Christmas finale, where Nessa professed her love for Smithy and proposed to him, leaving fans eagerly awaiting Smithy’s response. With nearly five years of anticipation since the last episode, viewers are on the edge of their seats to see how the storylines of their favourite characters will unfold in the concluding episode of “Gavin and Stacey.”
