Barlinnie prison is set to host an unconventional show as US rock band, The Darts, prepares to take the stage at the notorious jail. Nicole Laurenne, the band’s vocalist, expressed excitement about the unique opportunity, stating that the prospect of performing at the Glasgow prison far surpasses any quirky venues they have played at across mainland Europe. From a party boat in Germany to a street corner in France, The Darts have had diverse experiences, with their track “Love U 2 Death” even featured in the BBC’s Peaky Blinders.
Nicole revealed that the idea to perform at Barlinnie came from their promoter, Colin Duff, and she couldn’t resist accepting the offer. She sees it as a chance to bring rock music and joy to individuals who may benefit from uplifting moments. The band’s touring schedule is demanding, often leading to changes in the line-up, but for this particular gig, Nicole will be joined by Louise Sordoillet, Christina Nunez, and Mary Rose Gonzales.
The vocalist shared her anticipation for the prison performance, noting that it differs significantly from their recent shows in Italy and Germany. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the audience size and composition, Nicole is keen to embrace the experience and live in the moment. Reflecting on their past successful shows in Scotland, such as the one at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, Nicole expressed gratitude for the warm reception from Scottish fans and the support from BBC radio DJ Vic Galloway.
Following their set at HMP Barlinnie, The Darts will head to Leith Depot in Edinburgh for a nighttime performance. As they continue their tour that began in Sacramento, California, the band remains committed to delivering their garage-rock sound to audiences around the world. The Scottish Prison Service has been approached for comments on the upcoming show.
