Meta AI tools come to UK for first time

Meta AI tools arrive in the UK for the first time, as confirmed by the tech giant, Meta. The company’s generative AI tools, including a chatbot compatible with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, are now being introduced to UK users. These tools, initially launched last year, enable users to seek information, creative assistance, and inspiration by asking questions through text, voice, or images. Additionally, users can edit or generate new images using Meta AI.

While the tools have already been made available in the US, concerns from regulators regarding Meta’s utilization of public posts to train its AI models had delayed their introduction in the UK and EU. However, Meta recently announced that an agreement had been reached with the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), to address these concerns. As a result, Meta is now able to train its AI models on posts from UK users who do not object to their data being used.

In a blog post unveiling the UK rollout, Meta also disclosed that its technology will soon be integrated into Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses, in addition to its availability in several other countries across Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia in the near future. Initially, users in the UK can access these tools within Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Meta expressed its intentions to expand the availability of Meta AI to more countries and languages throughout the year, commencing with the United Kingdom and Brazil, followed by other countries in Latin America and Asia. The Middle East is also set to experience the introduction of Meta AI for the first time. The company emphasized the convenience of accessing Meta AI within familiar apps like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, enabling users to effortlessly utilize the tool with friends by tapping on the Meta AI icon or typing ‘@Meta AI’ in group chats. Furthermore, Meta AI can also be accessed via the web at meta.ai.

By progressively rolling out Meta AI, the technology giant aims to establish itself as a prominent contender in the AI market, offering its tools free of charge on popular social media platforms. Meta intends to compete with other AI chatbot firms like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, positioning itself as the leading AI chatbot provider. The company projects that Meta AI will eventually be accessible in 43 countries and a dozen languages, with a goal to become the most widely used AI assistant globally by the end of the year, with nearly 500 million active monthly users.
