Country Star Criticised for Revealing Rape Accuser’s Identity
Country music star Garth Brooks is facing backlash after disclosing the name of the woman who has accused him of rape in a recent legal filing. The woman, identified as “Jane Roe” in the lawsuit, had previously worked as a hairstylist and makeup artist for Brooks. The 62-year-old singer has denied the allegations brought against him.
Brooks’s decision to reveal the accuser’s name was met with strong criticism from the woman’s legal team. In a statement to The Independent, lawyers Douglas H Wigdor, Jeanne M Christensen, and Hayley Baker accused Brooks of acting out of spite and seeking to punish the victim. They stated that they would be pursuing maximum sanctions against Brooks for his actions.
The lawsuit filed by the woman details harrowing allegations of sexual assault. She claimed that Brooks had assaulted her during a trip to Los Angeles in 2019, where they were alone together in a hotel suite. The complaint outlines disturbing incidents of assault and harassment, including graphic descriptions of the assault and inappropriate behaviour by Brooks.
In addition to the rape allegation, the lawsuit accuses Brooks of further misconduct, including repeatedly exposing his genitals to the woman, sharing sexual fantasies, and sending explicit messages. The suit is seeking undisclosed damages from the country star.
Brooks’s legal team has refuted the allegations, stating that they had previously sought legal measures to prevent the victim from publicly repeating the accusations. The singer filed a complaint under the pseudonym “John Doe” before disclosing both parties’ names in the recent filing.
