A teenage killer, dubbed “jealous,” who stalked and murdered 15-year-old Holly Newton in a knife attack, has been identified and his image shared with the public. The decision to reveal the identity of the offender, Logan MacPhail, was made by Judge Hilliard to contribute to ongoing discussions around knife crime and violence against women and girls. While the law usually protects the anonymity of juvenile offenders, this case warranted an exception for the sake of open justice.
MacPhail, now 17 years old, was found guilty of the murder of Holly Newton in Hexham in January 2023 after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court. The court heard that MacPhail, who had previously been in a relationship with Holly, was unable to accept the end of their 18-month relationship and became envious when he saw her with another boy.
The tragic incident unfolded as MacPhail followed Holly around Hexham town centre before launching a brutal attack, stabbing her a shocking 36 times with a kitchen knife. The night before the murder, MacPhail had travelled to Holly’s house in Northumberland, showing signs of concerning behaviour that prompted Holly’s mother to take precautions.
On the day of the murder, MacPhail tracked Holly down to Hexham, where he attacked her near a pizza shop, inflicting fatal wounds. CCTV footage capturing MacPhail conversing with Holly just moments before the attack was presented in court. Despite claims that he intended to harm himself and not Holly, MacPhail was convicted of murder and injuring another boy who intervened.
Judge Hilliard justified the decision to disclose MacPhail’s identity by emphasising the need for the public to understand the circumstances surrounding such a serious crime. The judge highlighted the importance of transparency in cases involving young offenders and crimes against women, aiming to facilitate informed discussions and debates on these pressing societal issues.
MacPhail’s sentencing is scheduled for the end of this month, with the judge taking into consideration his learning difficulties throughout the legal proceedings.
