Stagecoach founder Ann Gloag will not face any further action over human trafficking charges, according to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal. The decision was made not to proceed with proceedings against Dame Ann Gloag and three others after they were charged with human trafficking and immigration offences in January 2023 by Police Scotland.
Dame Ann, who co-founded Stagecoach, has consistently denied the allegations. On October 9, the COPFS announced that there would be no additional proceedings against her and the other three individuals – two men and a woman. The Crown stated that they would only consider future actions if new evidence emerged.
In response to the decision, a spokesperson for Dame Ann criticised the “malicious allegations” which had resulted in a waste of public funds and police resources. They highlighted the damaging impact on Dame Ann’s reputation and expressed relief at being able to move forward. Dame Ann plans to reflect on her charitable work in light of these events.
Dame Ann Gloag, along with her brother Sir Brian Souter, founded Stagecoach in 1980. She was awarded a damehood for her contributions to business and charity. Stagecoach has grown to become the largest bus and coach operator in the UK and is currently managed by DWS Infrastructure.
