Mindy Kaling’s Velma series has been cancelled by HBO Max after receiving an underwhelming response from viewers. The animated ‘Scooby-Doo’ spin-off, where Kaling voiced the title character Velma Dinkley, only ran for two seasons before the plug was pulled.
The show, created and developed by Charlie Grandy, also featured voice actors such as Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, and Jane Lynch. Despite efforts to breathe new life into the iconic whodunit franchise, Max announced that they would not be renewing the series for a third season.
In a statement reported by Variety, Max expressed their gratitude to Kaling and Grandy for their efforts in creating a “fun and fresh world” within the Scooby-Doo universe. The show revolved around a teenage Velma and her Mystery Inc. friends solving mysteries in Crystal Cove.
Although a final Halloween special titled ‘Velma: This Halloween Needs To Be More Special’ was released recently, marking the end of the series, the overall response from audiences remained lacklustre. The first season of the show currently holds a 38 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The decision to cancel the series was influenced by the lukewarm reception it received from viewers since its inception. The backlash in 2022 towards the depiction of Velma as South Asian was also a factor that Kaling addressed at New York’s Comic-Con, expressing surprise at the reactions on social media.
Kaling defended her portrayal of Velma, stating that she saw the character as iconic and not defined by her ethnicity. She highlighted Velma’s qualities of being sceptical, hardworking, and underappreciated, traits that many Indian-American girls could relate to.
Despite the cancellation of ‘Velma’, Kaling expressed her love for the character and the series, reminiscing about how she had always identified with Velma as a kid. The cancellation of the show marks the end of Velma’s animated adventures, leaving fans reflecting on the legacy of this beloved character.
