The Trump Organization is eyeing the opening of a luxury hotel in the heart of Israel, as reported by The Independent. According to the article, the former president’s family business attempted to secure a deal last year to establish a Trump-branded hotel on the site of Israel’s former Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. Additionally, they explored the potential of converting a developing skyscraper near the Israel Defense Forces headquarters in Tel Aviv into another luxurious hotel. When completed, this Tel Aviv property is expected to have the most hotel rooms in the country.
This move by the Trump Organization comes after Donald Trump drew controversy in 2018 by relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem, a decision that garnered mixed reactions internationally, with Arab nations criticising it and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing approval. Eric Trump, one of the former president’s adult sons who oversees the Trump Organization, reportedly led the negotiations even after Trump began his re-election campaign in November 2022.
While discussions on these potential ventures have been put on hold due to the conflict that erupted in the region following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, the Trump Organization remains interested in establishing a presence in Israel. Eric Trump mentioned in an interview that the deals were close to completion before the outbreak of war and expressed confidence that they would resume once the situation in the region stabilises.
The properties under consideration for the hotels in Israel are owned by Nitsba Group, an Israeli real estate company. Reportedly, the Trump Organization had reached an agreement on the price and most details with Nitsba Group regarding the Jerusalem property. Plans were to start with the Jerusalem project before potentially expanding to Tel Aviv, facilitated by a commercial real estate broker who connected Nitsba with Lockwood Development Partners, a real estate investment and development company from Florida that partnered with the Trump Organization for this endeavour.
However, the negotiations faced a setback when Trump’s campaign called off talks prior to the outbreak of conflict, citing ethical concerns as Donald J. Trump neared the Republican nominee status. Despite concerns about potential conflicts of interest due to his various business ventures, including recent deals in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE, Donald Trump has shown continued interest in expanding his business presence globally, including in Israel.
The interest in Israeli properties by the Trump Organization follows intense scrutiny faced by the family business earlier this year. In a civil fraud trial, the former president, his sons, and former Trump Organization executives were found liable for inflating Trump’s financial information to secure favourable financing terms.
