The Independent is on a mission to help domestic abuse survivors with the launch of their Brick by Brick campaign. This initiative aims to raise £300,000 to construct a safe house for women and their children escaping abusive partners. The campaign has already seen a tremendous response, with over £100,000 donated by generous readers and celebrities.
This unique house, designed in partnership with leading domestic abuse charity Refuge, offers a lifeline to those faced with the stark choice of homelessness or returning to their abuser. The refuge, being built by housebuilder Persimmon, will provide a secure environment for survivors to rebuild their lives away from the torment of their past.
The house will feature two double-sized bedrooms, an open plan kitchen and dining area, a living room, and a private garden. With a focus on energy efficiency, the property will have solar panels on the roof, making it 30% more energy-efficient than older homes. The design includes security measures such as CCTV, enhanced locks on windows and doors, and a fire-proof letterbox to ensure the safety of residents.
In addition to physical security, the house will also offer emotional support and practical assistance to survivors. Refuge staff will provide guidance on safety planning, legal advice, budgeting, finding a new home, accessing healthcare services, and more. The aim is to create a supportive environment where survivors can heal and plan for a brighter future.
Unlike traditional refuges, this house will allow residents to bring their pets and will be located near essential amenities for easy access to schools, workplaces, and services. Each family’s privacy and comfort are a top priority, with deep cleaning and maintenance carried out between stays to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all survivors.
