Amazon Unveils New Warehouses Featuring 10 Times More Robots
According to The Independent, Amazon has recently announced the launch of new warehouses that will incorporate ten times more robots compared to their previous facilities. The e-commerce giant has been progressively enhancing the utilization of robotic systems for packing and dispatching customers’ orders. The company has labelled the upcoming warehouses as “next-generation” facilities, constructed on innovative systems.
The initial warehouse of this kind is scheduled to open in Shreveport, Louisiana. This facility will mark the first instance where the new technology will be integrated into every crucial operational area of the site. Upon full operation, the warehouse is expected to provide employment for 2,500 individuals alongside numerous mobile robots and a range of robotic arms. Amazon has reassured that the robots are intended to assist human workers with tasks that are repetitive or hazardous in nature.
One of the standout automated features is a robotic arm named “Sparrow,” responsible for picking up items and dispatching them for delivery. Another machine, known as “Proteus,” has been developed to move around the warehouse, carrying substantial stacks of items and distributing them efficiently. Amazon has emphasised that Proteus was purposely designed to be approachable to human employees, with the inclusion of visual elements to enhance its friendliness and communication with workers.
Julie Mitchell, the director at Amazon Robotics, described Proteus as being deliberately crafted to be “lovable,” with the vision of promoting collaborative work between humans and robots. Extensive field testing was conducted to ensure acceptance among Amazon’s workforce, even down to the consideration of ensuring the noises emitted by Proteus as it navigates the warehouse are not bothersome.
Previously, mobile robots at Amazon’s warehouses operated on defined pathways and were segregated within enclosures to prevent interactions with human employees due to safety concerns. However, Amazon envisions a future where all robotic systems can work alongside humans without restrictions. This approach underscores the company’s commitment to integrating innovative technologies to enhance operational efficiency and customer service.
The new warehouse in Louisiana has been purpose-built to accommodate these cutting-edge robotic systems. Amazon has indicated that the robots are designed to be adaptable for retrofitting into existing structures, hinting at potential future deployments in other locations. These robotics innovations are part of Amazon’s broader unveiling of new technologies, predominantly centred around artificial intelligence, such as tools for optimising delivery processes and AI-generated shopping guides offering product insights.
