These are the holiday destinations that have seen the biggest drop in flight price this year

Holiday Destinations with Biggest Drop in Flight Prices from the UK

This year has seen a significant decrease in flight prices from the UK to various destinations across Europe and beyond, making them the best value-for-money places to fly to. The drop in prices can be attributed to factors such as airlines introducing new routes and an increase in low-cost carrier flights to these destinations.

The top value destinations were determined based on the percentage by which their prices dropped for economy class return flights booked from the UK between 1 January 2024 and 30 June 2024 for travel throughout 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. According to Skyscanner’s Travel Trends Report, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced the largest drop in flight prices at 45 per cent. This decrease is partly due to the launch of new routes from London Stansted to Sarajevo, providing travellers with the opportunity to explore the city’s rich history and culture.

Following Sarajevo, Okinawa in Japan saw a 39 per cent decrease in flight prices, allowing UK travellers to delve into the prefecture’s natural beauty and heritage sites. Tirana, the capital of Albania, ranked third with a 36 per cent drop in prices, thanks to new flight routes catering to UK tourists from Birmingham and Bristol. Albania, known for its sandy beaches and vibrant nightlife, is increasingly becoming a popular Mediterranean holiday destination.

While many Brits continue to prioritise international travel, the rising cost of living in the UK has made budgeting a crucial factor when planning trips. 47 per cent of 20,000 Skyscanner poll respondents globally cited the cost of flights and accommodation as key determinants when choosing a holiday destination. Moreover, factors such as food, natural landscape and culture also influence travel decisions for 54 per cent, 49 per cent and 44 per cent of respondents, respectively.

Naomi Hahn, the vice president of strategy at Skyscanner, highlighted that travellers are increasingly seeking travel experiences that promote community and discovery in 2025. Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’ search feature, displaying prices from lowest to highest for destinations worldwide, remains popular among travellers seeking cost-effective options.

In addition to Sarajevo, Okinawa, and Tirana, other destinations with notable flight price drops from the UK include Sapporo, Japan (-30 per cent), Marrakech, Morocco (-28 per cent), Belgrade, Serbia (-28 per cent), Gothenburg, Sweden (-26 per cent), Prague, Czech Republic (-24 per cent), Halifax, Canada (-24 per cent), and Jakarta, Indonesia (-21 per cent).
