Saoirse Ronan has reflected on Ryan Gosling’s departure from the 2009 fantasy thriller “The Lovely Bones,” describing it as “sad” but acknowledging that the reasons were “totally valid.” Gosling was initially cast as Jack Salmon, the grieving father of a murdered teenage girl played by Ronan in the film adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel.
The actress, who was 14 during filming, expressed her fondness for Gosling and his dog George on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Ronan mentioned being saddened by his departure but understood that parting ways was necessary due to creative differences, leading to Gosling being replaced by Mark Wahlberg.
Gosling had previously mentioned his weight gain for the role, which ultimately contributed to his exit from the project. He explained feeling disconnected during the pre-production phase, leading to a misinterpretation of the character’s requirements. The actor accepted the situation, admitting that he had misunderstood the role and subsequently found himself out of work.
Reflecting on Wahlberg taking over the role, Ronan noted the actor’s experience as a father, which added depth to his portrayal. She highlighted the contrast between Wahlberg’s maturity as a father of three and Gosling’s relative youth, emphasising the different perspectives each actor brought to the character.
While the two stars didn’t end up working together on “The Lovely Bones,” they later collaborated on Gosling’s directorial debut, “Lost River,” in 2014. Ronan praised Gosling for his consistency and shared her positive experience reuniting with him on a different project.
In a recent interview, Ronan also revealed missing out on a significant role in a major franchise. She recounted auditioning for Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” series and the thrill of reading a scene from the films, despite knowing she was too young for the role. Ronan cherished the opportunity, even though she ultimately did not land the part that went to Evanna Lynch.
