Charli XCX has come forward to defend her friend and fellow musician, Matty Healy, over his controversial on-stage behaviour. The singer referred to Healy as a “brother,” but also confessed that there are times when she feels like strangling him.
The 32-year-old artist is currently engaged to George Daniel, the drummer for The 1975, which is Healy’s band. Recently, The 1975 collaborated with Charli XCX on her new Brat remix album, where they covered her track “I Might Say Something Stupid” alongside electronic producer Jon Hopkins.
In a candid interview with Apple Music, Charli XCX expressed her admiration for Healy as a songwriter and individual. Despite their close bond, she jokingly admitted to sometimes feeling the urge to strangle him.
Healy has faced criticism over the past few years for his involvement in various controversies, including making derogatory remarks about rapper Ice Spice and others. He issued an apology to Ice Spice in April 2023, clarifying that he did not intend to come across as mean-spirited.
Charli XCX praised Healy for his artistic risks and acknowledged that his performances could be divisive, but she emphasised that great art often provokes mixed reactions. She shared her longstanding admiration for The 1975’s work, stating that she has been a fan for many years prior to her relationship with Daniel.
Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, reportedly first collaborated with George Daniel on the song “Spinning” in 2021. The Brat remix album featuring The 1975 and a star-studded lineup of guest artists is set to be released on October 11.
This upcoming album, titled “Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat,” includes contributions from renowned artists such as Ariana Grande, Bon Iver, Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Julian Casablancas. Fans eagerly anticipate this musical collaboration between Charli XCX and The 1975.
