Lawmakers from both political parties have united in their determination to prevent former President Donald Trump from reverting the names of military bases to those of Confederate leaders. Trump recently announced his intention to rename Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg, contradicting the decisions made by a congressional renaming commission.
During a speech in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Trump declared, “I think I just learned the secret to winning absolutely and by massive margins. I’m going to promise to you … that we’re going to change the name back to Fort Bragg.” In 2021, a congressional process was initiated to remove the names of Confederate leaders from military bases, despite Trump’s objections in the final days of his presidency.
Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska led the legislation to establish the commission, emphasizing that the law mandated the removal of Confederate names. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts spearheaded the Senate version of the bill and highlighted bipartisan support in Congress for overriding Trump’s previous attempts to block base renaming.
Fort Bragg, originally named after Confederate general Braxton Bragg, was just one of several bases in the South that honoured Confederate leaders long after the Civil War ended. The decision to rename military installations stemmed from a historical context where such names were linked to the Jim Crow era, creating a need for more inclusive and representative naming conventions.
Following the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020, Congress took further steps to identify and rename military facilities, Navy ships, memorials, and buildings that glorified the Confederacy. Despite Trump’s veto of defense policy legislation due to the inclusion of the renaming commission, Congress successfully overrode his objections.
In a notable move, nine Army installations had their names altered to eliminate any association with Confederate leaders. The significance of renaming these military bases was underscored by the efforts of Gold Star families, who selected the name Fort Liberty to honour fallen servicemembers. Commission member Kori Schake emphasized the importance of maintaining the name as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
