A hurricane scientist logged a final flight as NOAA released his ashes into Milton’s eye

A renowned hurricane scientist, Peter Dodge, who conducted nearly 400 flights into the eyes of hurricanes during his career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), was honoured in a unique and poignant way. On a recent reconnaissance flight into Hurricane Milton, Dodge’s ashes were released into the eye of the storm, marking a fitting tribute to his contributions as a radar specialist and researcher.

The heartfelt gesture took place less than 24 hours before Hurricane Milton made landfall in Siesta Key near Sarasota, Florida. Dodge’s sister, Shelley Dodge, expressed her gratitude for NOAA’s efforts to fulfil her late brother’s wish, describing the moment as “very touching.” She revealed that keeping track of when the final mission would occur was a waiting game that finally came to fruition on the 8th of October.

Dodge, who passed away in March 2023 at the age of 72, had a distinguished 44-year career in federal service. His expertise in radar technology and research on hurricanes earned him several accolades, including awards for his work on Hurricane Katrina’s destructive winds in 2005. Despite facing challenges like a degenerative eye disorder that eventually halted his participation in reconnaissance flights, Dodge’s passion for his work remained unwavering.

His dedication to the field was evident as he continued to collaborate on radar research with organisations like the National Hurricane Center and Aircraft Operations Center. Dodge’s wide-ranging interests, from teaching math and science as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal to practising Aikido, showed his curiosity and zest for life beyond his professional achievements.

While the release of his ashes into the eye of Hurricane Milton symbolised the culmination of a remarkable career, it also highlighted the deeply personal connection Dodge had with the storms he studied. The act served as a touching tribute to a scientist whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the field of hurricane research.
