Mexico has taken a proactive stance against criminal activities targeting lime growers in the western state of Michoacan. The government announced the deployment of 660 soldiers and militarized National Guard officers to protect lime producers who have been facing extortion demands from cartels. Since the beginning of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s term on October 1, 300 soldiers and 360 Guard officers have been sent to various lime-growing areas.
In response to complaints from growers and distributors about extortion demands from cartels such as Los Viagras, more than half of the lime packing warehouses in Michoacan closed temporarily in August. The newly deployed troops are actively safeguarding packing houses, escorting fruit transportation trucks, and providing security at wholesale markets in key lime-producing regions like Apatzingan, Aguililla, and Buenavista. Within a short period, the troops have already confiscated ten guns and two grenades.
Limes hold significant importance in Mexican cuisine, making the protection of lime growers a crucial matter for the country. The state government of Michoacan had previously attributed the shutdown of lime producers in August to discontent over prices rather than cartel pressures. However, cartels have historically exercised control over agricultural product distribution in Mexico, including limes and avocados, dictating harvesting schedules and prices to growers.
The involvement of drug cartels in dictating market dynamics extends beyond limes and threatens various sectors of Mexico’s economy. Evidence suggests that cartels manipulate product sales, influencing pricing and distribution channels, while demanding a share of revenues in return. The impact of cartel interference was highlighted when Femsa, a major corporation operating convenience stores and gas stations, closed its establishments in Nuevo Laredo due to gang-related issues.
