Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign has experienced a significant decline in small donors compared to his 2020 campaign. According to OpenSecrets, only 31.7% of campaign donations this year have come from small donors, who are classified as individuals contributing less than $200. This marks a notable drop from the nearly half of donations that came from small donors during Trump’s 2020 campaign.
With the decrease in donations from everyday Americans, Trump’s campaign now has to rely more heavily on wealthy donors or political action committees supported by affluent individuals. This shift may require Trump to tailor his message to appeal to his wealthier donors, potentially posing a challenge in resonating with average voters.
In contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign has seen a consistent influx of funds from small donors, with 41% of her campaign contributions coming from those who donate less than $200. Harris reportedly received $1 billion in campaign donations since entering the presidential race in July, surpassing the $600 million raised by the Trump campaign.
Recent developments include Elon Musk endorsing and supporting Trump, leading the former president to modify his stance on electric vehicles (EVs) to align with Musk’s interests. The campaign has also utilised various tactics to encourage donations, such as offering contest opportunities and merchandise giveaways.
Despite efforts to incentivise donations through flashy emails and contest rewards, the effectiveness of these strategies appears to be waning. Republican operatives have expressed concerns regarding marketing to a conservative base, especially older individuals on fixed incomes. Additionally, the inundation of campaign messages through various channels, including emails and text messages, has irked voters, highlighting a need for revised communication approaches.
As the 2024 US election date draws near, the evolving dynamics of campaign funding and donor demographics are shaping the strategies of candidates like Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The contrasting approaches to fundraising and donor engagement reflect the complexities and challenges inherent in modern political campaigns.
