Ian Baird from Kirkbean, a small village in Galloway, has achieved a remarkable fundraising milestone by cycling 100 miles every day for a month. His efforts have resulted in an impressive total of £12,406 raised for charity. Ian has become a well-known figure in the local communities along the scenic Galloway coast, inspiring others to take up cycling for a good cause.
His philanthropic journey began in 2016 when he cycled 142 miles from Cumbria to Newcastle, raising £3,500 for MND Scotland. Since then, Ian has supported various charities, including Breast Cancer Now, Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, and Macmillan Cancer Support, among others. Despite facing challenges and losing fellow cyclists along the way, Ian persevered with his annual fundraising campaigns.
In May this year, the 67-year-old retired ground worker embarked on his most ambitious challenge yet – cycling 100 miles a day throughout the month in aid of Myeloma UK. His “31 Days in May” marathon captured the attention of people beyond Kirkbean, with Ian completing a total of 3,131 miles, equivalent to the distance between Glasgow and New York.
Ian’s dedication and mental resilience were key to his success in completing the gruelling challenge. He emphasised the importance of proper preparation and a positive mindset in tackling each day of non-stop cycling. Ian’s commitment to his cause extended to personally organising the logistics of the event, from designing promotional materials to ensuring all costs were covered independently.
The community rallied behind Ian during his marathon pedal, with locals joining him for laps each day and contributing to the fundraising efforts. A coffee morning organised by a fellow cyclist with myeloma and a Big Raffle coordinated by a resident were among the community initiatives that supported Ian’s fundraising campaign.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ian expressed gratitude to all those who supported him and contributed to the cause. His dedication and community spirit have helped raise nearly £65,000 over the years for various charities. Despite the challenges and uncertainties of the 31-day cycling event, Ian’s determination and community support propelled him to surpass his fundraising goals.
Ian’s commitment to making a difference through cycling serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of individual effort and community support in creating positive change. As he looks ahead to future endeavours, Ian remains steadfast in his mission to continue raising funds for charitable causes, demonstrating that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
