Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, introduced the company’s highly-anticipated ‘Cybercab’ – a robotaxi – at a Hollywood studio event on Thursday night. Despite the excitement surrounding the electric vehicle maker, fans will have to wait until at least 2026 for these vehicles to become available.
Musk arrived at the Warner Bros. studio lot in one of the futuristic ‘Cybercabs,’ emphasizing that these AI-powered vehicles do not feature steering wheels or pedals. He expressed confidence in Tesla’s advancements in autonomous driving technology, enabling vehicles to operate without human intervention.
The company has been offering the “Full Self-Driving” software for nine years, but there are concerns about its reliability. Musk discussed the transition from supervised to unsupervised Full Self-Driving, envisioning a future where passengers can sleep during their journey and arrive at their destination safely.
Tesla estimates the cost of the Cybercab to be below $30,000 and expects them to be on the market by 2026, possibly even before 2027. Additionally, the company plans to incorporate Full Self-Driving technology into its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Texas and California starting next year.
During the presentation, named “We, Robot,” Musk also revealed a self-driving minibus capable of carrying up to 20 passengers, aligning with Tesla’s focus on artificial intelligence and robotics.
As Tesla works to revamp its electric vehicle lineup, Musk aims to change the company’s narrative to emphasise advancements in AI and robotics. Analysts suggest that Tesla’s current model lineup may not be refreshed until late next year at the earliest.
Despite Musk’s ambitious plans to create a fleet of robotaxis, past predictions on autonomous driving timelines have proven overly optimistic. Safety regulators are investigating Tesla’s Full Self Driving and Autopilot systems over concerns about their effectiveness in ensuring driver attention.
Last April, a Tesla with Full Self-Driving technology was involved in a fatal accident in Washington state, raising further scrutiny on Tesla’s autonomous driving capabilities. Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Justice Department are examining the incident and the technology’s safety features.
In a continuous effort to innovate and revolutionize the transportation industry, Musk and Tesla remain steadfast in their pursuit of autonomous driving technology and the introduction of futuristic vehicles like the ‘Cybercab.’
