Economy grows in August after two flat months

The UK economy showed signs of growth in August following two consecutive months of stagnation, as reported by The Office for National Statistics (ONS). According to the latest official figures, the gross domestic product (GDP) saw a 0.2% increase in August, compared to no growth in both June and July.

The ONS highlighted that this growth was in line with expectations from economists and is seen as a positive development for newly appointed Chancellor Rachel Reeves ahead of the upcoming autumn Budget. ONS director of economic statistics, Liz McKeown, noted that while all major sectors of the economy experienced growth in August, there has been an overall slowdown in growth compared to earlier in the year.

McKeown further explained that in August, industries such as accountancy, retail, and various manufacturing sectors performed well, with construction also bouncing back from a contraction seen in July. However, this progress was somewhat offset by declines in wholesaling and oil extraction.

The latest economic data provides insights into the evolving landscape of the UK economy, with both promising and challenging aspects coming to light. As the country navigates through economic fluctuations, the growth recorded in August offers a glimmer of hope amidst a backdrop of uncertainty and change.
